This Day (Night Signaling Edition)

November 12th, 2012 by Brendan Wolfe · No Comments

On this day in 1864, the above watercolor, painted by William Waud, was published as an engraving in Harper’s Weekly. Its caption read: “Army of the James—Signaling by Torches Across James River from General Butler‘s Headquarters.”

While we’re at it, happy birthday to William Allan, a Confederate officer, educator, and writer who was born on this day in 1837 near Winchester. He collaborated with the celebrated mapmaker Jedediah Hotchkiss on the The Battle-fields of Virginia (1867).
